How to Know If Parental Controls Have Been Disabled
You usually cannot assume parental controls are still on just because you set them up once. Check the device settings, confirm the filter still blocks a known test site, and look for a gap in protected activity. Silence on a phone is not automatically proof that someone disabled protection — a gap is a reason to check whether protection can still be verified.
A lot of parental-control products are built around one promise: block the worst of the internet. That matters. It is not the whole job. Controls get paused, profiles get deleted, DNS gets changed, and phones spend hours asleep. If you only notice a problem when you happen to look over a shoulder, you are finding out too late. Blocking is not the same as knowing

Then do a boring live check: open a browser and try a site or category you know should be blocked on that child's profile. If it loads when it should not, the control is not working for that browser on that network. If it is blocked, that only proves the current session is filtered — not that it will still be filtered tomorrow.
Also look at Screen Time, Family Link, or app-approval settings if you use them. DNS filtering and operating-system limits overlap, but they are not substitutes. A child can lose one layer and keep another.
Checks you can do without standing over the phone
If your tool only blocks and never reports, you are limited to spot checks. Some family products record whether protected DNS activity was seen recently. That is not a live camera on the child. It is closer to a heartbeat: did this device still ask the filtered DNS service for names?
A recent heartbeat is reassuring, not a guarantee of perfect behaviour. A missing heartbeat needs context. Overnight silence is common. A device that was active all afternoon and then stops sending protected DNS — while the child is using it — is a better reason to look at settings. Limitations to keep in mind
No consumer parental-control product can promise that you will always know the moment protection stops. Encrypted apps, already-installed VPNs, a spare unfiltered tablet, and borrowed phones can all sit outside the system you set up.
