How to Block Twitch on Your Child’s Phone
Yes. Screen Time on iPhone or Family Link on Android can stop the Twitch app being installed or opened. Device-level DNS filtering can block many Twitch-related lookups so the app and twitch.tv fail to load normally on that phone. Blocking Twitch does not read chat or show which stream was watched. Combine OS restrictions with DNS, then test a browser as well as the app.
Twitch is not quite YouTube and not quite Discord. It is live video with a public chat running beside it, often while a game is also open. Parents searching for a block are usually trying to stop late-night streams, donations, or chat with strangers — or all three. A phone can be stopped from reaching Twitch. It cannot produce a transcript of chat. Voice may also continue in Discord after the Twitch app is gone. Name those layers before you pick tools.
Live video, chat, and the website are different surfaces
The Twitch app plays streams and hosts chat. A browser on twitch.tv is another full client. Hiding the app without DNS filtering often leaves the website working. Clips and some media can also appear in other apps; those need their own decisions.
Twitch accounts are free to create. Blocking this phone does not delete a username used on a PC. If the family rule is about the child, include other screens.
Use Screen Time or Family Link for the app
On iPhone and iPad, Screen Time can require a parent for new apps, limit Twitch, and lock the passcode. Notification previews can still announce that a favourite channel went live; turn those off if that ping is part of the problem.
On Android, Family Link can manage Play Store installs. Check cloned apps and second users. Twitch is a small install and fits easily in an extra space.
A time limit helps when streams are allowed after homework. A DNS block is for when this phone should not reach Twitch.
Add DNS filtering for the app and twitch.tv
Twitch needs lookups to authenticate, fetch video and load chat. Device-level DNS filtering can refuse those lookups on Wi-Fi and on cellular when the phone itself uses the filtered resolver.
OathSafe protection is configured on the child’s device, so it can continue applying on Wi-Fi and cellular. You don’t need to configure the home router. DNS Parental Controls: A Simple Guide for Parents is the map. A stream already buffering may finish a few seconds. Blocking Twitch-related DNS domains is intended to prevent or substantially disrupt a new live session; apps can use cached data and changing infrastructure, so test the result on the child’s actual device.
YouTube is the on-demand neighbour. How to Block YouTube on Your Child’s Phone covers Restricted Mode versus blocking. Discord is the voice neighbour. How to Block Discord on Your Child’s Phone covers that path.
If Twitch still feels present
Test twitch.tv in a browser on cellular data. Check Screen Time or Family Link, DNS or Private DNS, a VPN, Discord, and a PC still signed into Twitch.
A protection-gap alert does not list which streamer was on. It tells you the filtered DNS path may have stopped. How to Know If Parental Controls Have Been Disabled is the verification page.
Where OathSafe fits
OathSafe includes Twitch among the streaming services parents can block in App Controls. The block uses DNS filtering. OathSafe does not read Twitch chat, does not see Bits or subscriptions, and does not capture video.
Trip Wire is designed to notice when that DNS protection can no longer be verified and to let a parent know it may need attention.
OathSafe is family internet protection for iPhone, iPad and Android. It uses DNS filtering to block unwanted online content and monitors whether that protection appears to stop. It can alert parents when protection cannot be verified, without reading their child's messages or browsing content.
A parent checklist
- Decide whether you want a time limit or a full stop on Twitch for this phone.
- Restrict the Twitch app and new installs with Screen Time or Family Link.
- Add device-level DNS filtering and test twitch.tv in a browser.
- Turn off live-notification previews if those pings are part of the problem.
- Consider Discord if voice continues after the Twitch app is gone.
- If Twitch returns, check DNS, VPNs, extra users, and other signed-in screens.
Frequently asked questions
If I block Twitch, can I see who they were watching?
No. Blocking Twitch stops or degrades the connection from that phone. It does not produce a watch history or a chat log.
Does blocking the Twitch app also block the website?
Not automatically. Test twitch.tv after you add DNS filtering. The website is a full client.
Can a VPN reopen Twitch after a DNS block?
A working VPN can bypass some DNS-based filtering if it uses its own DNS path. Restricting new apps reduces that risk. No DNS-based service can guarantee that an already-installed VPN cannot connect.
